What is Bug Club Phonics?

Bug Club Phonics is a structured phonics program developed by Pearson Education, designed to support the teaching and learning of early phonics skills. It is based on the principles of systematic synthetic phonics, where children learn to decode words by breaking them down into individual sounds and blending them together.
The Bug Club Phonics program includes a range of books, online activities, and teaching resources that are designed to support teachers in delivering effective phonics instruction to their students. The program is suitable for children aged 4-7 and is aligned with the UK government’s phonics screening check.

Stages of Learning

The Bug Club Phonics programme has six stages of learning:

Lilac – Phonics Phase 1
Pink – Phonics phases 2 and 3
Red – Phonics phase 4
Yellow – Phonics phase 5
Blue – Phonics phase 5 (alternative spellings)
Green – Phonics phase 6 (suffixes and spelling rules)
Each stage is designed to build upon the skills and knowledge gained in the previous stages and to help children develop their phonics knowledge and skills. The programme includes a variety of teaching resources, including books, eBooks, and online activities, to support children’s learning and progression through the stages.
