Letterland Phonics

Letterland Phonics

What is Letterland?

Letterland Phonics is a phonics program designed to teach young children how to read and write using a unique, multi-sensory approach. It was developed by Lyn Wendon, an educator and artist, and is based on the idea of turning letters into “fun” characters that children can easily remember.

In Letterland Phonics, each letter of the alphabet is associated with a character that has a story and a distinctive personality. For example, “Annie Apple” is a character that represents the letter “A,” and “Bouncy Ben” represents the letter “B.” Children learn the sounds of the letters by associating them with the characters and their stories.

The program uses a range of materials and resources, including books, songs, games, and activities, to engage children and help them learn phonics in a fun and interactive way. It covers a range of phonics concepts, including letter sounds, blending, segmenting, and sight words.

Letterland Phonics is designed to be used in early years and primary school classrooms, and it has been adopted by many schools around the world. Its aim is to give children a strong foundation in phonics that they can use to become confident and successful readers and writers.

Stages of Learning

Letterland Phonics is a comprehensive phonics program that is designed to teach young children how to read and write using a unique, multi-sensory approach. The program is divided into three stages that gradually introduce new phonics concepts and build on the skills learned in the previous stage.

Here is an overview of the stages of learning in Letterland Phonics:

Stage 1: In this stage, children are introduced to the Letterland characters and their sounds. They learn how to form letters correctly and how to blend and segment simple words. They also learn basic handwriting skills.

Stage 2: In this stage, children learn additional sounds and spelling patterns, and they continue to practise blending and segmenting words. They also learn how to read and spell longer words and how to use punctuation.

Stage 3: In this stage, children consolidate their phonics skills and focus on reading and writing fluently and accurately. They learn how to read and spell more complex words, including words with alternative spellings and silent letters. They also develop their comprehension skills and their ability to write for different purposes and audiences.

Each stage of Letterland Phonics is designed to be taught over the course of a school year, and the program includes a range of resources and materials to support teachers in their phonics instruction. These resources include books, songs, games, and activities that are designed to engage children and help them learn phonics in a fun and interactive way.
