Phase 2 Phonics

Phase 2 Phonics

What is Phase 2?

Letters and Sounds Phase 2 is a phonics teaching program that is used in many UK primary schools to help children develop their early reading skills. This phase focuses on teaching children to recognise and read letters of the alphabet, and to use these letters to form simple words. Here are some of the key skills and concepts covered in Phase 2:

  1. Learning the 26 letters of the alphabet and their sounds: Children are taught to recognise each letter and to associate it with a sound. For example, they learn that the letter “a” makes the sound “a” as in “apple”.
  2. Blending sounds to form words: Children learn to blend sounds together to form simple words. For example, they might blend the sounds “c-a-t” to form the word “cat”.
  3. Segmenting words into sounds: Children learn to break words down into individual sounds. For example, they might segment the word “cat” into the sounds “c-a-t”.
  4. Tricky words: Children learn to recognize some high-frequency words that do not follow phonetic patterns. For example, they might learn to read the words “the” and “to”.
  5. Oral blending and segmenting: Children practice saying sounds in words and then blending them together or segmenting them apart.

Overall, Phase 2 provides children with a strong foundation in phonics and sets them up for success in later reading instruction.
