What is Jolly Phonics?
Jolly Phonics is a phonics program designed to teach children how to read and write using a systematic approach to teaching phonics. It was developed in the 1980s by British primary school teacher Sue Lloyd and her colleague, Chris Jolly.
The program teaches children to read and write using a set of 42 phonetic sounds (also called phonemes) and letter combinations, rather than teaching them to recognise whole words by sight.
The program includes a range of resources, including books, workbooks, flashcards, songs, and games, to help children learn phonics in a fun and engaging way. Jolly Phonics is used in primary schools around the world, particularly in the UK and Ireland, and has been shown to be effective in helping children learn to read and write.
Stages of Learning
The Jolly Phonics scheme is typically taught in six main phases. Here is an overview of each phase:
- Learning the letter sounds: In this phase, children learn the 42 letter sounds of the English language and how to form each letter shape correctly.
- Learning letter formation: In this phase, children learn how to form each letter shape correctly and practice writing letters.
- Blending: In this phase, children learn how to blend sounds together to read words. They start with simple, three-letter words and progress to longer words.
- Identifying sounds in words: In this phase, children learn how to identify individual sounds within words. For example, they might learn to identify the first sound in the word “cat” as “c”.
- Tricky words: In this phase, children learn to read and write words that don’t follow the usual phonetic rules, such as “the” and “said”.
- Advanced phonics: In this final phase, children learn more complex phonics rules, such as different ways to spell the same sound, and how to use prefixes and suffixes to change the meaning of words.
