Phonics Across the Curriculum

Phonics Across the Curriculum

How to use phonics to support other areas of learning

Phonics activities can play an important role in promoting literacy across the curriculum. Here are some ways that phonics can be integrated into other areas of the curriculum:

  1. Reading comprehension: Phonics instruction can help children to develop decoding skills, which are essential for reading comprehension. By understanding the relationship between sounds and letters, children can better decode and understand written text.
  2. Writing: Phonics can also help children to become better writers. By understanding the sounds and spelling patterns of words, they can learn to spell words more accurately and use more complex vocabulary in their writing.
  3. Science : Phonics can be integrated into science and social studies lessons by teaching children the specialised vocabulary that is used in these subject areas. By understanding the phonetic structure of these words, students can more easily understand and remember new vocabulary.
  4. Foreign language learning: Phonics instruction can also be beneficial for students learning a new language. By understanding the sounds and spelling patterns of words in their native language, students can more easily learn the sounds and spelling patterns of words in a new language.

By integrating phonics across the curriculum, teachers and parents can help children to develop strong literacy skills that will support their learning and academic success across all subject areas.
