Phonics activities for Year One children

In Year One, children will learn the 44 sounds of the English language, which are called phonemes, and how to blend these sounds together to read words. Children will also learn about digraphs and trigraphs, which are two or three letters that make one sound, as well as learning split digraphs, where a vowel sound is split by a consonant, such as in “bike” or “cake”.

Here are some tips to help a child in Year One with phonics:

  1. Read with them regularly: Reading together is an essential way to help your child with their phonics. Encourage them to sound out words they don’t know and help them understand the meaning of new words.
  2. Play phonics games: Phonics games can make learning fun and engaging. There are many free online resources available, such as “Phonics Bloom” and “Teach Your Monster to Read.”
  3. Use phonics flashcards: Flashcards can be a useful tool to help children learn and practice letter sounds, blends, and words.
  4. Practise writing: Encourage your child to practice writing letters, words, and simple sentences.
  5. Create a phonics wall: A phonics wall is a space in your home or classroom where you can display letters, sounds, and words.

Remember to keep the learning experience fun and engaging, and to celebrate your child’s successes along the way.
